According to the traditional account, Muhammad ibn Abdullah, an Arab religious, military and political leader and the founder of Islam, is born in Mecca. He later reports receiving revelations that form the Quran, the central religious text of Islam. By the time of his death, most of the Arabian Peninsula had converted to Islam, and within a decade Muslims conquered Mesopotamia, Byzantine Syria, Byzantine Egypt and large parts of Persia.
